Selecting Safety Shoes Based on the Present Threats in Your Workplace

July 4th, 2011

While selecting a pair of safety shoes, the first things you need to determine are the possible threats in your work environment. By doing this you can buy the perfect shoes that will ensure the safety of your feet in your workplace. The types of hazards present on the job can differ from one industry to the other, depending on the type of work done, the equipment used, the raw materials present and the overall workplace environment. If you job involves working with sharp objects like nails and wires you need to protect your soles from getting punctured by any of these sharp objects. Puncture resistant safety shoes, which have anti-perforation soles, are suitable for this kind of work environment.

Probably the most foot injuries occur in the construction industry where there is a constant threat of falling objects. These falling objects could crush the feet and toes, leading to serious injury and even amputation. For this kind of work environment you can choose from a variety of safety shoes that have impact protection. These shoes feature impact-absorbing material and also have padded ankle collars to protect the sides. This kind of footwear also provides the extra support required while on the job. Working in slippery environments could result in sprains and broken bones caused due to falling down. For this you need to find yourself a good pair of safety shoes which come with anti-static rubber soles. These shoes make it easier to walk across floors that are flooded with any kind of slippery liquid.

Working with sharp machinery like chain saws without any protective footwear can lead to serious damage to the front and upper portion of the feet if they come in contact with the sharp edges of the machinery. Steel-toed boots are specifically made to protect your feet from threats like this. The toecaps can be made from different materials such as polycarbonate fiber, which does the job as well. These toecaps are meant to protect the upper portion of the feet. If you work in a chemical plant you need to make sure the safety shoes you buy are specially made to be resistant to different kinds of chemicals.

It is best to buy shoes from a reputable manufacturer since they are the ones who know the best when it comes to protecting your feet from various hazards in different industries. The place where you are employed needs to offer protection and comfort throughout the day. If you work in a dark factory environment there are chances that you will run into sharp objects. For this leather safety shoes are the best since the material is thick. So remember, before selecting a pair of safety shoes you need to figure out your work environment and make a list of all the possible threats that can cause injury to your feet.

Fraud in the Workplace

February 18th, 2011

Every company wants to prevent fraud from occurring within their organisation and most companies will not admit to being vulnerable to any type of fraud since they don’t want customers and suppliers to have a negative perception of their business. The truth is there are many people who will be willing to take the steps to implement a scam. Once someone has a great understanding of the internal controls structure and how to bypass it, the temptation becomes too great and they put their fraud scheme in place.
Fraud is always a topic worth discussion however with the current state of the economy the temptation to scheme is increased with increased energy bills, unemployment levels and levels of personal debt. These personal and family pressures and the incentives for carrying out a fraud scheme are enough to devise a scam. Individuals working for organisations often come up with excuses to justify the reasons for trying to defraud their employers. These include a) their current salary isn’t in line with competitors and they “deserve” this payoff or they work a lot harder and aren’t adequately compensated for their efforts; b) The amount they are taking from the employer isn’t significant enough for the management to care about; c) Management are making people redundant and the packages being offered won’t cover the expenses incurred once unemployed; d) A blatant and arrogant excuse but its – management are smart enough to notice the scam at all.
The three main factors, pressure/incentive, opportunity and rationalisation) that result in the implementation of scams is commonly known as the fraud triangle. Having all three of these present will increase the risk of that individual committing fraud and potentially costing your company millions of pounds from the scam or potential bankrupting the organisation.
The key is to work on reducing the opportunity by having an adequate and effective fraud detection scheme in place. Taking away the “I can get away with this thought” from someone’s thoughts is possible by having a controlled environment that will first of all discourage scams, then detects then immediately and then deters most types of fraudulent behaviour whether that be for low level employees, contract workers, consultants, or senior management.
If you need a scam protection scheme in your organisation then it is wise to attend a fraud prevention conference to learn about fraud prevention techniques and systems as well as network and speak first hand with others who have prevention systems and those who have had to deal with someone running a scam in their organisation.

Bullying And Harassment – How to Deal With it at Workplace

February 6th, 2011

While working in the corporate world we tend to meet various kinds of people. Each one is a different person and has his or her own temperament and attitude. Of course being an organization we do not have the luxury to choose our own teammates as we have the choice to choose our friends. Hence we have to work with all sorts of people and adjust with them and acclimatize as soon as possible. Of course since it is a corporate atmosphere and there is cut throat competition people vie for the attention of their bosses and this sometimes leads to things that may not be always to our liking and fair. Plus since competition is so immense these days that people go in for a kill. This sometimes leads to bullying and harassment at the workplace. This is bad but unfortunately true. It is a phenomenon that does exist in the corporate world. With different people in a group this is an unfortunate thing.

Bullying and harassment is a phenomenon that everyone has faced sometime or the other. There are some people who will bully you and harass you so that attack your morale and try and de motivate you so that they score on front of their bosses. In some cases people enjoy teasing others and take pleasure out of it. So how should we react when we face such a situation at workplace? Should we lose our temper and catch the bull by its horn or should we be patient and tackle the situation. Well our suggestion is that be patient and handle this situation with care. It is a matter of your job and acting hastily can prove harmful. So the best way to deal such bullying and harassment is to first speak to the person who is doing this. Try and speak your heart out to him and ask him why that person is behaving that way.

One thing should be kept in mind is that workplace bullying and harassment should not be mixed with a harsh comment or a negative feedback. What is needed to be understood here is that a harsh comment by your seniors or colleagues should be misunderstood to be a bullying or harassment. There are all chances that your boss or colleagues may be nasty people personally and they may pass on a nasty comment on you. In such cases we have to be mature enough to understand that this is not bullying and harassment and just a snobbish nature of our colleagues. Especially in the case of performance appraisal and feedback there are chances that your manager may try his or her favorite to get a better promotion and increment and that time may try to demean your performance and this might take an ugly shape sometimes. In such situation we have to assess our situation in the company and then decide to take this matter to the higher authorities. All said and done it is imperative that we handle this situation with aplomb and not let it hamper our work.

Workplace E-mail a Continual Problem

February 1st, 2011

It’s 2010; everyone knows that e-mails create permanent records which can be used against employers, right? Wrong. Sharing inappropriate jokes, discussing sensitive topics and using personal e-mail accounts at work are a continual problem in the workplace when it comes to e-mail use – and can be an employer’s worst nightmare. You can avoid litigation by making sure that everyone understands what’s allowed, what isn’t and the consequences for violating your company’s policy.

Tips on avoiding litigation
* Don’t share inappropriate jokes. This must be old news to everyone at this point, right? Unfortunately not. Recent studies show that nearly 97% of all employees now have access to the Internet and that most employees spend between five and ten hours per week using their personal e-mail accounts – which often result in the sharing of “jokes” that are simply too good not to share. What’s one joke, right? The sad truth is that many employees continue to believe that doing so is harmless or that the information will disappear forever by simply hitting the delete button. Yikes!
* Avoid sensitive topics. When discussing sensitive topics such as accusations of workplace discrimination, it’s smart to avoid those discussions via e-mail as they can, and likely will, be used against you. Imagine e-mailing your boss and admitting that someone dropped the ball when investigating a sexual harassment matter – or even worse – let it continue because someone was too busy to look into it? Legal experts say that’s it often better to meet in person for those conversations. Harassment training can go a long way in preventing this from happening.
* Understand privacy issues with personal e-mail accounts. Most employees use e-mail as their primary source of workplace correspondence. Some continue to believe that using their personal e-mail accounts on Yahoo!, G-mail or messaging through Twitter and Facebook while at work are private. Not necessarily so. According to a report on National Public Radio (NPR), that data is likely saved to your company’s hard drive – often creating a permanent record. So, an employee using their Yahoo! account to tell a friend about the workplace harassment they’ve witnessed can come back to haunt you.

How detailed is your workplace e-mail policy?

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) claims are on the rise and e-mail continues to be used against employers to prove racial discrimination, gender discrimination, sexual harassment, hostile work environments and more. Make sure that you have online sexual harassment training along with a detailed workplace e-mail policy and training platform which work for your company – not against it.

A drum lifter often has a load attachment which is easily changed to suit multiple needs and purposes. In addition to improving safety drum lifters also save on the costs associated with moving stationary equipment and avoid disruptions to the manufacturing process, which improves safety. Drum roll lifters not only maximize productivity, they also enhance the safety of your workers, which is absolutely necessary. Drum roll lifters maximize safety with their adjustable overload protection and ergonomic design. The majority of drum roll lifters are made of solid steel. It is easy to use a drum roll lifter by lowering the unit onto the drum you’d like to move when the lifter is elevated. The gripping pads will then secure the drum, making it safe to move. Once the drum is lowered to the ground the drum is released then the lifter is locked into an open position so it is ready to lift a new drum. They can stack one drum vertically above another, tilt, hold and empty drums onto vessels. Drum lifters are high load bearing and designed to perform heavy duty jobs . When you position objects at a height that is suitable for operators, which is the purpose of a platform lift, then the number of musculoskeletal disorders are reduced. Due to the safety and reliability of platform lifts they are used in many different industries. There are three types of operating methods for platform lifts including hydraulic, self-positioning and pneumatic. Other scissor lift options include double and triple scissor lifts (referred to as multiple stage scissor lifts) as well as ball screw electric lift tables. A hydraulic scissor lift will use hydraulic cylinders to move the lift platform. Pneumatic scissor lifts operate with the use of air bags to move the platform up and down. Using weight to move its platform a self-positioning scissor lift is weight sensitive. Providing zero load drift at any elevation, a ball screw electric lift table is perfect for robotic integration and applications. There are a number of safety options available for lift tables, including toe guards, safety bars, speed fuses and protection skirts. The safety associated with a platform lift can be improved further with the individual fail arrest device..

Workplace Safety And Employee Safety

January 6th, 2011

Safety in the workplace should be everyone’s top priority. Most employees have the expectation that their workplace will offer a safe environment in which to do work. Some workplaces are safer than others just as some occupations offer more safety than others. Workplace safety ranks high on the list of goals for most workplaces. Employers care about employee safety.

When a person goes in to work at a new job for the first time, they automatically assume there work place is a safe environment. After they start working for the company and they find unsafe working conditions this can cause employees to become reluctant of their jobs. People always want to feel safe no matter what it is that they are doing, whether it is driving in their car, walking down the street, or if they are at work. If an employee is constantly worried about safety hazards when they are on the job, this will undoubtedly interrupt their work performance.

Workplace Safety can be a priority for a company or a necessary inconvenience to production quotas and the demands of running a business. The fact is however, without an emphasis on safety, costs will rise, expenses will increase, and any company that is well managed will put a priority on training in safety related issues simply because it’s not only the responsible thing to do, but it also makes sense when factoring in the bottom line costs and savings.

Companies must work within the law, and while some regulations may seem complex, the fact is, in order to avoid penalties and ultimately reduce accidents, it’s important to comply with the established programs. During the practice sessions, ensure that all the employees follow the rules. Mark the exits with noticeable signs so that employees know where to go to in case such an emergency occurs. Never lock these exits, but be sure to install security cameras on these doors. Also, it might be sensible to install fire proof furniture. Always remember to keep a watchful eye for safety hazards around your business. Things may seem fine but safety problems can appear out of nowhere.
